We had a wonderful week in London, brining XSI 7 to the Soho post (and games!) community. So many of our amazing customers are all around the corner from each other, seperated by pubs, curry houses and sushi shops. Jellyfish, The Mill, Passion, Studio AKA, Fluid (and many more!) are all in this incredible area of London.

We had two events in London, one in the afternoon and one in the early evening. All in all, close to 150 people turned up to see Softimage|XSI 7 in action. Christoph Schinko did a great demo on advanced rigging and created an ICE effect live for the crowd - even taking suggestions on how to improve it from the audience. Right when we wrapped up London, the team in NYC went on stage. (Much hilarity ensured via SMS on the mixed up posters, so we had people from the MILL NY and Jordi from the Mill London each hold up the poster)

Thanks to everyone who turned up (and Lex for his very helpful registration support) - it was an honor for me to have helped to bring XSI 7 to you.

Green Screen Fun in San Fran

What a week it's been since we announced XSI 7 to the world.

The on-line communities are buzzing with the news.. www.xsibase.com, www.3dbuzz.com and www.cgtalk.com are filled with comments and questions about our latest release.

Next week we'll be in London and New York city hosting two launch events on July 17th (7/17!) and at the same time we'll be in those markets we are also holding an On-Line Event so we can bring more details about XSI 7 and ICE to the rest of the world!

Right now, I am in San Francisco shooting the on-line launch at Pixel Corps, a Softimage Training Partner. We are shooting on green screen, which is always fun, and the talented team at Pixel Corps will cut and comp in a digital set.

I am here with Marc Stevens, Softimage GM and Mark Schoennagel, Softimage 3D Evangelist. Both Marc/k's are very dedicated to brining the message of XSI 7 to as many people as possible. The amazing thing with this shoot is how we were able to build the demos. Normally, when you create demos for beta software, it is key that they are created and rehearsed well in advance. Because of the stability and the flexibility of the ICE platform, we created the majority of our demos in the last few days.

Really. We spent a lot of time reading the posts and questions on over 1000 public forums, and worked with our new R&D material and test scenes and spent yesterday building over a dozen new demo scenes. I can't tell you how unheard of this is. Never ever have we deviated from our planned demo material to use brand new material.

You can even see Mark smiling before we got started. He told me later maybe he was sweating this, just a little bit. But the software came through with flying colors. yay ICE!

So we are about to close it up for the day, thanks to everyone involved for all their hard work.

XSI 7 on 7/7

Yesterday was a great day. After a ton of work from many different people around the world, we unveiled SOFTIAMGE|XSI 7 to the world.

This product launch was probably the most significant one we have ever done, as XSI 7 offers up ICE, a new platform for creating outstanding visual effects and 3D tools. One of the main features of ICE is that it offers up the chance for a collaborative workflow between artists and technical directors, and the same was true for the actual launch of the product. http://www.softimage.com/products/xsi/

Work on the launch of XSI 7 started several months ago. Shortly after GDC, we held an internal training session with our application engineers from around the world, including our training partners Digital Tutors, as well as trainers Adam Sale and Craig Slagel. It was an intense 4 days, and it started off the ICE training and launch prep.

In April, my work for launching XSI 7 kicked into high gear. Part of what I do is work with technology partners to showcase how their hardware can benefit from SOFTIAMGE|XSI, so I spent the week of NAB in Vegas having meeting after meeting, planning our launch events & SIGGRAPH activities. XSI 7 is such a fantastic showcase for the multicore systems that are available today, we named our demo character "Mulcor" after Multi-Core. (I like the fact that he has an 'Alienbrain,' the name of another one of our products, but no one else seems to find this as funny as I do)

Our partners really came through for us for our launch. HP & Intel, along with Microsoft and NVIDIA are supporting us for the worldwide kick off of XSI 7. We have events on july 17th in NYC and London, and on that same day we will be hosting a pre-recorded on-line event with one of our top media partners. I promise info is coming very soon! I am actually off in a few hours to head to San Francisco to shoot the event. Photos will come in a few days.

For SIGGRAPH, we have a lot going on, but what I am most excited about is our User Event on Aug 12th. Instead of the traditional format of product presentations in a theatre setting, we are hosting a visual, multi-media event that later will turn into what promises to be one of the best Softimage parties ever.. A key element for us is that the Softimage staff will have the entire night to mingle and chat with customers, friends and partners, instead of an hour before and after. This event will be a celebration of ICE and all the hard work our team put into creating the technology. We are very thankful for the support we got to host this from Dell & ATI, along with Microsoft and Intel. If you are going to SIGGRAPH, trust me when I say this.. do not miss this party.

Playing Guitar Hero 3 in Texas.. aka I love my job

I am in Dallas thsi week with Peter de Lappe and Jodi Vetterl, attending the Game Education Summit. I'll post more details on the conference tomorrow after I have had a chance to attend a few sessions, today was more about the exhibition hall for me.

Oh, and playing Guitar Hero 3. Which i LOVE.

Softimage has a kiosk at this event, and so does Dell University. Dell brought Guitar Hero 3 master player "Tipper Queen" to do some demos and play GH3 with the attendees. I played "Hit me with your best shot" with her. So fun. but WOW. I was on easy and she (of course) was on expert.

I have played Gh3 and Rockband with some pretty good players, but Tipper is absolutely amazing. I think she was playing right handed instead of her usual left, and she is killer. She played onstage during Bill Gates' CES keynotes with Slash.

Tipper, aka Kelly, is also studying game design, and peter doesn't know it yet, but he is going to be teaching her some XSI tips tomorrow during a session break.

Reviving the travel blog.. getting ready for a BIZZY summer!

Hello!

It's been ages since I updated the Soft travel blog, and there are actually several reasons for that, which are not that interesting and mostly to do with me not making it a priority. BUT - we are looking towards a BUSY summer filled with SIGGRAPH action, so its time to get back in the habit again!

So where have we been since my last post February? GDC was in San Francisco in February this year, and we didn't have a booth this time. We chose to have private meeting suites on the show floor, and directed our energies to our Education Summit and Softimage Student User Event, which were both firsts for us. It was a good week - a different GDC experience, but a good one!

After GDC, there were a couple of small customer trips, until I got to spend 10 days in Los Angeles and Las Vegas this April for NAB, and a few LA-based events. NAB was interesting for us, since Avid didn't have a booth on the show floor. I have to admit, I thought it would be an easier week. Typically, NAB is filled with partner meetings to go over roadmaps and co-marketing planning sessions squeezed between hours of booth duty. This year it was crazier than ever - how does THAT happen?? Everyday started at 8am and finished at 7pm. We met resellers, customers, partners, educators, Avid counterparts. It was a ridiculously busy schedule, and as a result, a relatively lowkey week in vegas. Although I did have time to go to the AJA party at the Bank at the Bellagio, which gave me some inspiration for our SIGGRAPH 2008 User Event. More on THAT later!

I actually do not have ONE picture from Vegas this year. I had misplaced my camera, and only found it when I left. Honest.

After leaving NAB, I headed back to LA for a User Event at Gnomon. We held the event to kick-off the class that started on May 5th, and got to see some familiar faces!

and even though the Gnomon event wrapped at 9:30pm, our day wasn't done yet! Mark and I headed downtown to do a walkthrough of the location of the 2008 Softimage SIGGRAPH User Event. We found an excellent location, and are feeling pretty pleased with the way it's shaping up.

Softimage SIGGRAPH User Event - Tuesday, August 12th from 8pm-1am. Put in on your calendar - it's going to be a good one. Invites will go out mid-to-end of June.

On the road again...

New year, new travels.. although being back in Seattle is a non-stop case of deja-vu. I have been here so many times for various Microsoft events and launch activities that we actually recoginized the Westin staff at the hotel this time around.

I have actually been home since November of last year, which was great, because i was fully focused on launching the new Education Programs. I was at a school in Seattle yesterday going over details of the program, and i don't know who gets more excited - teachers hearing about the free, learn at your own pace certification that comes with 40 hours of professional training, or students who hear about the free one year commercial license they receive if they graduate from a partner school. I can't wait to talk to the schools attending GDC next week about this - its going to be really great for the XSI community as a whole!

We also have more news coming soon on Professional Training.. i'll keep you posted.

So Seattle - it really is Microsoft town! Microsoft was holding an event for their WW field teams - 5 days of training and seminars for over 6000 staff. We were there for a Partner Summit, where Microsoft partners demo their wares to the attendees. Quite a few Microsoft employees were pretty happy to see us there, as they remembered when we were part of the family. I started telling people that the "soft" in Microsoft actually came from us. Just for fun. :)

Because I was with Mark, I got to pick something up at the Microsoft store. Mark can shop there because he is an alumni, so I know own "Scene It" and PGR4 for my Xbox 360.

We spent the next two days visiting clients and trying to plan last minute GDC technical details. Our brand new Dells - fully loaded with all the bells and whistles (I got to order them online - i have never ordered such powerful equipment - it was pretty cool to choose a 1TB hard drive) will be running the new ATI Fire GL 7600s which we have been testing all week.

So now I am off to Vancouver, I have client visits and education meetings lined for the next three days, and of course I get to see my friend Adam Sale, whose voice i know so well now, as I have listened to his instructor certification training material quite a bit in the last few months!

It's great to be back out on the road, but not that easy to snap back into it. I forgot how stressful it can be not having access to email and being able to get as many things accomplished from a hotel room. I just logged on at SEA-TAC and have over 100 new emails just from today that i need to look at and respond to. ack!

I am looking very forward to blogging at GDC - we don't have a booth this year, so hopefully I'll have more time to write about what's going on at the show.

SOFTIMAGE @ VIEW Conference--Torino, Italy

Torino (Turin) is the industrial capitol of Italy (home of FIAT- check out the new Fiat 500 - cute classic, Italian answer to the Mini Cooper). Located about 75 miles west Milan, the VIEW Conference (previously The Virtuality Conference)- is generating a huge buzz for SOFTIMAGE.

The 4-day show is a host to mostly students and 3D design professionals entering the industry. Italy is world renowned for its design, and this is the place where students come to learn about the craft of 3D, animation, design visualization and all forms of visual technology and story telling.

The SOFTIMAGE booth was packed every day to capacity by students wishing to learn more about XSI, the art of 3D animation, and to watch in fascination the work of our customers in our SIGGRAPH Show Reel--and the show favorite, short animation, A Gentlemen's Duel (by Blur studios).

SOFTIMAGE is also offering Master Classes each day of the show, filled to capacity and led by Enea Le Fons, senior certified Softimage instructor. We've had outstanding special guest presentations from customers including:

Game developer PLASTOS (Luca Da Rios, President & CEO--Margarita & Kevin G.)

Visual effects and commercial post production houses- The Shift (Gianfranco Sgura and Emiliamo Colantoni-red background) and Xchanges post facilities (Marco Negri & Gianluca Pedrazzi - metalic background) also provided great presentations and demonstrations of how they successfully use XSI to win business and turn in excellent commercial works.

Digital Tutors/PL Studios Grand Opening

I had the honor of attending the opening of PL Studios (aka Digital Tutors) last Friday in Oklahoma City, OK. Before the grand opening, PL Studios hosted UPGRADE 2007: Evolving Art & Filmmaking, Oklahoma’s first annual computer graphics, animation and gaming forum.

I can't get over how fast time goes by.. we planned the Make Your Mark tour for months.. and in 2 short weeks it was all over.

Each city and presenter and panelist were all so different.. and i enjoyed the time we spent listening and learning from our clients in Boston, New York, LA & San Francisco.

See below for the MYM Tour Summary that my colleague Kevin G just prepared. I wanted to post this first, because it pretty much sums up where we have been for the last two weeks. Yesterday was the last event, held in San Francisco, and it was a little sad for us to see it end so soon!

This was the first time I have worked with all of the different divisions of Avid.. the Video team, who we know pretty well, but the Digidesign and M-Audio teams are new to us to collaborate closely with. It was a great experience..

Overall, the panel sessions were amazing. In all 4 cities, I felt like I learned something from each team on how to help my own career.. the advice and suggestions from Marc, Chris, John & Jonathan were invaluable, and I was very proud to have these 4 speakers representing the VFX industry.

Our four artists in the break-out sessions were equally fantastic... Todd, Young, Raffael and Jonathan all brought a different story to each city with their different career paths and projects.

I also got to work with our newest Softimage employee - Peter de Lappe - who is joining forces with Mark Schoennagel to spread the gospel of XSI as our new 3D Evangelist.

For Make Your Mark, Montreal-based Softimage represented its professional 3D animation technology software, SOFTIMAGEXSI, by inviting 3D industry thought leaders to attend the lively and informative panel sessions in all four cities: Boston, New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco. Softimage additionally provided highly-visual demonstrations of its professional 3D animation software in each break-out session—providing a comprehensive demonstration of how one can break into the 3D industry using XSI software for a career in 3D game development, visual effects, broadcast or pre-viz and design visualization.

In Boston, Modus FX president Marc Bourbonnais represented the visual effects industry in the first panel event. In the Softimage break-out session, PSYOP’s Todd Akita shared his experience working on award-winning spots for some of world’s biggest brands (Mercedes, Infiniti, MTV, Nike, Coca-Cola and more)—and provided advice on building a successful career using XSI 3D software.

In New York, Chris Johnson from TOPIX in Toronto shared his experience at the panel discussion about learning 3D and how he has applied his expertise in a career creating 3D visuals for major television advertisements. In Los Angeles, John Norris, director of Artists and Directors Cooperative spoke about how artists can break into the industry. One of the downsides about writing a blog is the associated guilt I feel when I don't update it fast enough! I have been trying to get a quick around to posting an update about the NYC Make Your Mark event, but time keeps getting away from me!

I am now in LA, gearing up for the next event, but I want to share some details about last weekend in NYC.

I arrived in the city last Thursday and headed off right away to meet with some schools and training facilities to discuss XSI training for professionals. We know there are so may jobs out there for talented artists that can use XSI, we just need to be able to offer a couple of transition courses.

One of the things I was discussing with the schools I was at was offering a free weekend class in Feb for non-xsi freelancers to get them up to speed. I would love to hear some feedback from NY shops if they think they could help us get some people there.. also we are looking at London as a possibility as well.

So after a long day running around NYC I got to SVA to meet up with Mark Schoennagel and Mike Walsh of Softimage, where we were getting ready to be the guest speakers at the NYC User Group, run by Phill Avanzato. This was exciting, because we were showing a little tech preview from SIGGRAPH of some exciting technology that may or may not make it into the next release of XSI. Looks like what Mark showed resonated well with the crowd, so that was very encouraging! Mark also opened up XSI 6.5 and showed how the 3Dlight beta plug-in works for rendering in XSI.

It was a great opportunity to catch up with a few XSI guys (and gals!) that I haven't seen in a while, like Todd Peleg, Leigh Rondano, Alex Arce, Mike Wharton and many more. (We missed you Kris Rivel!) I love going to the NYC User Groups- they jut go by SO fast!

On Friday, we went to a couple of client shops to hold some technology sessions and talk training. Both places we visited have grown SO much since the last time I had been there, with both project scopes and team sizes. There are some fantastic projects coming that are using XSI - I can't wait to be able to talk about them!!

Later in the day we met up with our guest panelist for the event, Chris Johnson of TOPIX and his wife Melissa. It was nice being able to have the time to chat and catch up, very different from when we are all running around at SIGGRAPH.

This was a longer post than I expected.. I'll do a second one for the Make Your Mark event later today - it was a great day.

This event was a departure from other seminars we have done.. it was the first audio-3D-video seminar with all the divisions of Avid. The event opened with a panel of industry experts (including Modus FX's Marc Bourbonnais representing 3D) talking about what students and artists can do to get noticed by professionals. While the panel was heavily skewed to audio and the use of myspace pages to get noticed, all the panelists agreed that using the web is a premiere was to get yourself marketed.

Networking is key to get a job in the industry.. so work with your teachers and your contacts.. go to events, mingle, introduce yourself.. From the CG side - be online, post your work, get on the industry forums - it's key to.. "Making Your Mark!"

Next week we hit NYC.. Chris Johnson and Young Jang will be representing CG for the event.

The "Make Your Mark" tour is the first time that Avid Video, Softimage, Digidesign & M-Audio are participating in a seminar series all together. Each division was responsible for bringing in a panelist and a presenter to talk about their field of expertise.

ADAPT is a wrap...

I am a bit late with my last ADAPT post.. the conference came to a fantastic close last Friday.
Thursday was the Halo 3 party, which by all accounts, was amazing. (I only know this 3rd hand, because I fell asleep at 8:30pm while I was 'resting up' for it!)

Anyhow.. before we got to that point, I was lucky enough to watch two Softimage client presentations at ADAPT.

The first was Ron Martin fro Stage 3 Media who presented the web-based sci-fi show "Sanctuary." If you haven't seen the show - take look - http://www.sanctuaryforall.com/ . Created in Vancouver, Canada by many of the team behind Stargate SG1, Sanctuary is an online series shot entirely in HD.

VFX Producer Ron Martin presented some of the challenge that the team at Stage 3 media faced with creating the show, including the business challenges in running an on-line distribution model. If you read up on the vision behind Sanctuary, you'll see that the creators did not enforce a strict digital rights management policy on their product - they want their fans to be able to share. At the same time, a studio has to make enough money off a web series to be able to continue to afford to fund the project. There is no doubt, that Sanctuary is a popular product. Legal and illegal downloads have reached over 1 million viewers for the first 8 episodes.

Sanctuary has broken several barriers on the web broadcasting front, and the team at Stage 3 media will continue to do so on the web-based business model.

Our other guest presenter in town for ADAPT was Greg Punchtaz of Janimation. Greg took a different presentation tactic than Ron, instead focusing on his career in make-up and vfx. What was extremely interesting for me (and the audience too!) was seeing some of the early work from Greg, and how he started his career on iconic projects like Robocop & Nightmare on Elm Street 2.

Greg talked about his experiences working with industry greats like Phil Tippett (ADAPT's keynote speaker) and Rick Baker. Little-known fact - Greg and Aaron Sims were high school friends in Texas who used to practice make-up effects on their friends. One year for Halloween, classmate John Norris (now Aaron's production partner) was sent home because he was deemed "too gruesome."

Overall, ADAPT was great fun - and hat's off to the team behind it. It was a great conference, and so cool that it was in Montreal. Thanks to Greg and Ron for flying in to present here, and thanks to Pierre Yamond & Daniel Leduc (Hybride), Rob Moodie (Buzz Image) and Marc Bourbnnais (Modus FX) for the Montreal-based customer presntations.

Blogging live from ADAPT, standing here with Softimage customer Ron Martin, Bill Desowitz from vfxworld.com and Jonny Abenheim of ADAPT. We are about to go into the Autodesk cocktail party, just chilling in the lobby first.

It's a beautiful summer-like day in Montreal, and close to 1000 people have gathered in Montreal to attend presentations from studios around the world like Double Negative, Pixar, Bioware, Ubisoft and more. This is the second year of the conference, and its great to see how its doubled in both attendance and sessions.

It's great to see so many faces here from SIGGRAPH - our friends Syd Mead and Roger Servick are here again, our friends from Gnomon are in town, the House of Moves team arrives tomorrow, and of course, ADAPT systems sponsor Dell are also represented. For us at Softimage, its great to be able to spend the time connecting with customers and listening to their presentations. Something we don't get to do at SIGGRAPH - actually take the time to watch and listen! Dilip and Herman and Sid are attending the sessions today, I think more Soft staff will be there tomorrow.

I am looking forward to Ron's Sanctuary presentation tomorrow, and I am VERY pleased to say that I personally installed the license for Greg's preso on Thursday. Yes - my very first install - and it worked flawlessly (Of course!)

Today is the beginning of ADAPT Montreal - a great conference being held here right here in our home town. In it's sophomore year, ADAPT has a line-up of the industry's best and brightest artists and legends.

Update from India… the last of the Asia & Southeast Asia Training Tour.

Hello from Mumbai! It’s 3pm in India, and we are about halfway through our last training day on this whirlwind tour.

Mumbai is a place that’s so hard to describe. Busy, bustling, friendly, religious, commercial, rich, poor – all whirling and churning and constantly on the go.. you could spend weeks in this city and see only a fraction of it.. Of course, if you are trying to get through Bombay traffic on the Wednesday of the Ganesh Festival, you might see even less, at a much slower pace. LA traffic is NOTHING compared to Mumbai!

This week we held two seminars – one in a university nestled in the heart of Bollywood, one at a downtown ATC.

The university in Bollywood was the first event on Wednesday. This was the day after we arrived from Phuket, and Nikki and I are wearing the Marriott golf shirts that we received since our luggage was lost (it has since been returned to us) – this is not the latest Softimage uniform!

Anyhow – Whistling Woods – the university - was amazing. Founded by one of India’s top film directors, Whistling Woods is an elite academy that teaches everything from acting to sound design to animation. Whistling Woods is a partner with several international academies in the world, and has a very rigorous admittance policy. The location is next to the sets where the majority of Bollywood movies are shot. Actually, the school in the middle of a nature reserve, where leopards are free to roam in the hills. Really.

Here’s a quick story about the worst thing I have ever heard visiting a studio or a school..

[me] Do you ever see any leopards?
[client] No, they stay away. I do see a cobra once in a while when I go for a smoke.
[me] Haha, very funny.
[client] Why are you laughing? Since we are trespassing on cobra territory, every once in a while we need to call the cobra catcher.
[crickets chirping]

For those who know me, having scenes in our reel from ‘Snakes on a Plane’ was hard to watch. So was the Corona commercial. I don’t like snakes. At all. Not on a plane, near my beer, or least of all in a garden 20 feet away from me!

Anyway.. back to training..

Since the sessions in Mumbai are all in English, I have enjoyed being an unofficial TA. I have been trying to learn the tools and commands to support the class during the intro to XSI session. Although I can’t really help more than navigating property pages and opening scene files, I have perfected the “Nikki – please, we need some help over here” command very well! My favorite part of the course is watching people just go and really dive in and move ahead with the software. GATOR time is the best.. I like watching people get it.

Best quote from today… “that’s the beauty of our GATOR.” Yes, yes it is.

The best part of working for a company like Softimage is seeing and remembering that the CG community really knows no borders. Animators are animators – they are passionate and dedicated and intelligent and high-main.. I mean highly skilled – and they are all focused on homing their skills and showing their stuff.

We met with some of the head CG community leaders here in Mumbai, and how animators here use the web forums slightly differently than in other parts of the worls. If an animator working in a film studio is stuck on a technical issue, he will go to the central web station (not everyone has web access at their desks) in the studio and post a question on cgtalk.com or highend3D.com. He or she will then go back to work, and check back on the responses later. Animators in Indian studios are very careful about being anonymous, since it’s a tight community and not hard to tell who is working where and on what. This gets particularly tight-lipped in studios working on outsourced projects.

Tomorrow is my last day here in Mumbai, and as every fabulous city that hosted the training tour, it will be hard to say good-bye to our friends here. So I won’t just yet.

It's Monday, Sept 17th at 5:40pm. Nikki, Teresa and I are in Bangkok, Thailand, waiting to leave for Mumbai.

We spent 1.5 days in Phuket over the weekend, taking a break and splitting up the long China
-> India journey.

We were scheduled to fly from Phuket to Bangkok and then onto Mumbai yesterday.

At 3:45pm, our plane was on the runway, next in line for take-off when the an extremely powerful squall hit the airport. Nikki and I looked at each other and asked.. "Are we really taking off in this???"

We didn't, because the same time we were sitting on that tarmack getting ready to leave, the One Two Go Jet crashed on the runway.

It was sad and surreal and scary and the next 24 hours were dedicated trying to Bangkok. We ended up taking a three hour bus ride to Krabi, where Thai Air had a jet waiting to get all of its passengers to our destination. They were wonderful and took very good care of us.

We are about to leave for Mumbai, safe and sound, and happy to be ok.

Shanghai Training Day - 'Intense' is probably is the best word for it!

We held the Shanghai Training Event yesterday. It was a really intense session. The room was full - at least 30 trainers and professionals were there - and we stared at 10am and ended at 6pm. Nikki led the training, and Alex provided translation and hands-on support.

Although, as unofficial TA, I am not sure how annoying I was.. probably slightly. Every once in a while I'd lean over to Nikki and whisper.. "psst.. look, that guy is struggling, he has the no icon texture map on his tank!" .. "Nikki.. psst.. that girl is having a hard time transferring to the medium res model... should 'we' help her?"

Bless my patient colleague, she didn't tell me to hush up!!

It's interesting to see and observe people learning something when you don't speak the language. I spent all day gauging people's reactions to the material and the software. The people being trained yesterday really embraced the material, and many who hadn't really seen much of XSI other than a demo were enjoying the experience of diving into the workflow. It was awesome watching a room of people GATOR at the same time!

One of the trainees new to XSI said "XSI should be the future of 3D in China - no other package out there can compare to it in terms of workflow and performance." Two artists from a post poduction studio outside of Shanghai took a 3 hour train ride - EACH WAY - to get to the event. They have been waiting for XSI training for a long time, as they want to switch their pipeline over to XSI as soon as they can.

I can't say enough what a great job Adam Sale did on this material. Using the soldier model from August Zhang and the material built by our content team for the Six Education tour, this is such a comprehensive training package - i was learning more about Crosswalk & Maya today! Its going to be instrumental in helping schools and trainers around the world teach the next generation of 3D artists. Speaking of, very cool to see how many young women are studying 3D in both Shanghai & Seoul. We need to keep trying to balance out that sky-high level of testosterone out there in the industry!

Nikki said something so brilliant today.. "Women working in 3D today are the warriors for the next generation." Love it.

I stayed in the hotel today while Teresa, Alex and Souma-san went to visit clients. Nikki and I had a top secret assignment to finish, something long overdue for our WW education & training community. I'll write more about it in the near future, once the kinks have been worked out and it's approved by our management team. (Hi there, Management Team! :)

Tomorrow is a travel day, with potentially a client meeting in the AM. Saturday is a day off somewhere fabulous, and Sunday we head to Mumbai, India for the last leg of this Amazing Training Race.

It's going to be sad leaving Shanghai, this has been an incredible week.

Trying to blog from Shanghai...

It's funny.. I can't see anything I post on the blog page, but through a feed on Facebook I can see my updates.. but i can't post any photos onto Facebook.. but I can use Picasa.

Using the internet from China can be a challenge, although this is a very small problem compared to last year when I was here with Mark, and he was trying to download the latest RC of version 6 from here. Since downloading a file of that size wasn't working through our network, Mark had to find alternate ways to access the latest build. Something about splitting the file onto newsgroups, etc. I still don't like to think about that, it was a stressful few days last December!

So this is Day 2 here in Shanghai, were we have spent the last 2 days visiting clients and Education partners. Personally, I was feeling a bit somber today, being 9/11 and all, and so far from home, remembering where I was that fateful day 6 years ago.

Back to present. We visited a few studios here that have set-up outsourcing pipelines, and it was interesting to hear and try and help solve a set of concerns and issues that are the same, but different. When supporting a company that provides outsourcing services, the support requirements range from strictly modeling and or animation, to full project pipelines. I met with an Art Director today that is managing over 2 dozen simultaneous projects with a team of just 130 artists. While he stated that the projects ranged from Big to Small, the fact that all those projects going on at once doesn't leave time for training and development. Speaking of Big and Small, they had the funniest conference room names.. Small 1, Small 2, Small 3.. Big 1... etc. I found this both amusing and brilliant in its simplicity.

Tomorrow is a big training day, where we bring out new material to the local market. It's going to be an intense 6 hours, with Nikki doing the training and Alex doing the translation.

I should have more blogging time as the week progresses, although Shanghai, as always, is a complete whirlwind and the days are over before I realize it!

Back to work.. now in Shanghai, China

Hello again..

It's Monday, September 10th, and Nikki and I are now on our own in Shanghai. It was hard to say goodbye to Seoul and our friends at CORE, Animal Logic & Blur. Saturday market the end of our stay in Seoul with Jay, Lee & Choi from CORE taking Nikki, Jeff and I to a fabulous restaurant that was on a mountain overlooking the city. Later we went to the King's Palace and finished the day shopping in a Korean open air market.

Last week was stellar. This one will be too, I can feel it. Shanghai has this incredible pulse to it.

We flew to Shanghai on Sunday morning, and had a few hours to explore the city by day and night. It's amazing that I was here 8 months ago, and I had a totally different experience. Last time, we were staying at a so-so hotel that was in a very unexciting part of town. Now we are right in the center of the action on Nanjing Road. As I type this, I am looking at the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, the famous Shanghai landmark. I never want to leave my room, because the skyline at night is art in itself - much better than watching TV!

Nikki and I would have made our male colleagues proud yesterday.. the very first thing we did was go to the awesome Sai Bo market, which has EVERY electronic device known to man (and woman!) there. We had to leave before we spent a fortune, but what FUN! We felt a bit too geeky, so we headed to the Yu Garden after, this great open air market that has everything you'd expect a Chinese market to have.

Today we are waiting to meet Alex Liao, our Sales Manager for China, to go over the training requirements and head to the location where our event will take place on Wednesday. This week will also be filled with client meetings. Teresa Manley, our Director of WW Marketing, arrives tomorrow, and she'll be joining us for the rest of the tour.

Technical Seminar &

So Wednesday was our seminar day, and today was our Technical Seminar. Animal Logic, Blur & Softimage all gave 3 hour presentations on studio pipelines & face robot.

I thought the production challenge was long. WOW. This was an intense day for the presenters, and the 80 attendees. It's just amazing to see that level of concentration from the audience for 9 hours. I was constantly ducking out here and there, but 80 people stayed and stayed, with only a break for lunch. It was intense!

It was really interesting to hear about the custom tools both Blur & AL developed to work with XSI and other software within their pipelines. I felt techy-d out after a bit.. it was a bit over my head!

Although, since I was able to install an addon yesterday for the training seminar.. I wonder what else I could pick up with XSI?

Off to dinner now. It's 7:0pm on Friday night and everyone is exhausted. Thomas, Jeff, Nick, Remi, Damien and Jeff are all heading home this weekend, but Nikki and I leave for Shanghai on Sunday to meet Alex Liao from our Taiwan office and my boss, Teresa Manley.

No more blogging for the weekend, but I will post some photos with Picasa tomorrow. Have a great weekend!

Our first Training Seminar

Thanks to our sponsors from Dell, we were able to hold two hands-on training sessions today with our Seoul-based training partner, SoftimageATC (http://www.softimage-atc.com/index2.htm)

My colleague Nikki Bridgman trained over 30 users with our brand new Professional User Material recently developed for Softimage by Adam Sale.

The day was great.. Trainers from local universities and top studios in Seoul were present to learn an overview of the software. Our partners here now have 30 more hours of material to present once we leave. We'll be making the material available ww very soon, stay tuned!

Seoul Seminar Wrapup - Animal Logic & Blur

So many times at events like SIGGRAPH or GDC, I only get to catch half of a presentation before I am pulled away for something. It's such a treat to be able to sit down and listen to our clients talk about their projects for an entire presentation.

Yesterday, thanks to Animal Logic and Blur, I was able to do just that.

Damien's presentation on Happy Feet yesterday was great. Based on the Happy Feet seminar presented at SIGGRAPH, Damien went through the process of bringing this Oscar-winning production to life. Happy Feet was shot using traditional filmmaking principles, as if it were a live action movie rather than a CG film. Director George Miller said at the onset of the project that he would have use real penguins in Antarctica if he could. Scenes were developed rather than shots, starting with the voice acting, then mocap shoots driven by the voice performance and later a technique called "lensing" allowed the teams to see what worked and didn't from the mocap shoots.

Damien stated that they were consistently adapting live filming techniques to a CG process and vice versa, which overall enhanced the creative result of the project.

One aspect that I found particularly interesting as part of the character performance pipe was the audition process for each character, where each character was auditioned similar to that for a real actor, with voice and movement. This also proved to be an audition for each animator too.

Damien's parting words from his presentation was that two main lessons were learned during the making of Happy Feet.. 1) The importance of flexibility and 2) Having several iterations minimizes overall risk.

Some fun numbers I walked away from the presentation with.. over 5600 rigs were created, 17 mocap actors were on stage at one time, up to 600 people were on staff at the project's peak, and over all 94 TERAbytes of data were stored.

Next up was Remi's presentation of Gentlemen's Duel. GD is another project that I am quite attached to, because last year during my first Asia tour & the XSI 6 Tour, we were given permission to play the short in every city, so I have seen it probably a dozen times, and I love watching a audience react to this great project. For those who don't know, Blur works on short films as a creative enhancement process for their artists. There is essentially (and again, I am paraphrasing) an open call for story pitches. The winning story pitch gets to be made into an animated short within the studio.

For XSI, GD was the first time the SW was used in Blur's pipeline for animation & rigging. Since GD had a longer project schedule, the team was able to look at what needed to be done in order to incorporate XSI into Blur's MAX-based pipeline. Never easy to incorporate anything into an established pipeline, the artists and TDs at Blur embraced XSI for its artist-friendly workflow, reliable architecture, strong referencing system, scripting with Python and the speed and flexibility in the rigging and animation toolsets.

Remi also talked about the Transformers cinematic, which was all keyframe animation, and a few other ongoing projects that are mocapped based.

All in all - our 9 hour day came to a close at 7pm, where we posed for a few photos before heading out to yet another delicious Korean feast.

Animal Logic & An Artist Finds His Dream Job

About 300 CG artists attended the seminar.

After Jeff and Thomas presented FR 1.8, we heard a few words from Jang Jin-Ho.

Jin-Ho, a very talented modeler from Seoul, was looking for a job in CG and a chance to see the world. He started posting his work on one f our favorite CG sites, www.3dtotal.com . His art was receiving a lot of hits, but no offers were forthcoming. So Jin-Ho went to the next step, and created his own website, and sent off samples of his work out. A short while later, Jin-Ho's incredible work attracted the sharp eyes of the recruiters at Blur Studio, where Jin-Ho will be starting work in October of this year.

Jin-Ho had some advice for the audience here in Seoul that I think resonates internationally - and I am paraphrasing here - "Don't be afraid to speak up .. it's better to try to be heard than not speak at all."

Next up were Nicholas Hore and Damien Gray from Animal Logic from Sydney, Australia. Nicholas talked about the working environment & the potential job opportunities that will soon be available at AL, and encouraged the audience (and anyone reading this!) to check out the Animal Logic website at http://www.animallogic.com/ for current open positions. Nick also mentioned that artists should feel free to send their information in now, so when AL will be ramping up for their next animated feature in a few months they'll have a database of artists to work with.

Nick highlights that Animal Logic is very close to the famous Bondi Beach!

CG Supervisor Damien Gray was up next, and I have to say, gave one of the most illuminating presentations on a film that I have ever seen. I'll admit, I am biased, I LOVED Happy Feet, but hearing the production details were fascinating. Damien started off be explaining the mission of Director George Miller, who's mantra was " The story is not the plot.. the story is the audience's experience of the film."

This is cool.. we can blog and email during the Seoul Seminar.. not that I don't want to pay 100 per cent attention to Jeff presenting Face Robot... but I can multi-task.. excellent! I just finished my presentation, which Nikki commented was the slowest she ever heard me speak... it's all due to simultaneous translation.. otherwise i would have whipped through it! Imagine last year when the poor translators had both me AND Mark Schoennagel to translate?

So - Nikki and I are currently sitting in a room with about 300 student and professional 3D artists, and the event has begun, with over 6 hours of XSI and Face Robot technical presentations.

Earlier today, Jeff & Thomas Kang were interviewed by several CG magazines based in Seoul. One of them - Graphics Live - has a huge feature on SIGGRAPH. Since I can't read Korean (yet!) here's the link for those who can.. http://www.graphicslive.co.kr/xbook_read.html. What's fun is seeing the huge article on ARK (SIGGRAPH 2007 Best of Show) and Mirage (2007 Student Academy Award winner) plus the photos of the Soft booth. I'll be bringing a few copies home.

This is so strange, all my tabs and headers on the blog page are now in Korean!

I don't have much to report yet, yesterday was a big travel day for most of us. It was a very international evening at the Inchon airport, with Damien & Nick coming in from Sydney, Remi from LA, Nikki from London, and myself from Vancouver.

We were met at dinner by the team from CORE, as well as Souma-san, our head of Asia sales from Japan.

Today the seminar starts at 12:30pm with a presentation from Softimage Montreal. Oh wait, that's me. Luckily I still have Leo's memory stick from SIGGRAPH with Marc's User Group presentation.. I hope I can do it justice, and try to remember the biggest rule of simultaneous translation.. SLOW DOWN. YES, EVEN MORE.

Then its a full afternoon with tech presentations from Animal Logic and Blur, along with Jeff Wilson and Thomas Kang. We are expecting over 250 people today. Can't wait!

Vancouver Film School Visit

The first thing I did when I got to Vancouver (after digging out my umbrella!) was stop by Vancouver Film School with my colleague Kevin G. Clark to visit Larry Bafia and his team of talented teachers including Glenn, Michael, Nigel and Magic who are training the next generation of XSI masters.

With over 200 licenses of XSI, VFS is one of the biggest XSI training facilities in the world. We shared some of our new material created for SIGGRAPH, including our new reel, the results from the Production Challenge and the 'Making of Mirage,' the Academy-award winning student film by the talented Young Jang.

It was a great visit, and I am really, really glad we stopped by. Huge thanks to Larry Bafia for hosting Kevin & I and taking us through the program and the classes.

Softimage Training Tour .. the beginning.

Hi-

I am in Vancouver this weekend, preparing to leave for Seoul, Korea on Monday morning. I am meeting my colleagues Nikki Bridgman, Jeff Wilson and Yoshiyuki Watanabe on Tuesday, along with Thomas Kang, Nick Hore and Damian Gray from Animal Logic and Remi McGill from Blur for a series of seminars hosted by CORE, our channel partner in Korea. After Seoul, Nikki and I are going to Shanghai and Mumbai to host a series of training seminars with our new training material designed to help professional 3D artists make the transition to XSI from other packages.
